#38: Francophobia

What did the French ever do to us? If anything, their disapproval of the Iraq War back in 2003 is something to be appreciated in retrospect, rather than condemned and maligned. After all, the founding of our country was inspired by their philosophies and they directly aided us in our revolution, yet we stereotype them as liberal, cheese-eating, wine-drinking, surrender monkeys. Who could forget the changing of “French fries” to “Freedom fries” after their opposition to the invasion of Iraq, which was about as effective of a statement as a child sticking its tongue out at an adult. Fox News pundit Bill O’Reilly took it a step further and called for a boycott of all French goods, which was obviously a failure and an embarrassment on his part. After the tension between us reached a peak during the beginning of the Iraq War, Francophobia has since declined in recent years, and today people can stuff their faces with whatever “French” food they want and still feel like a true American.
