Elliott Smith—Either/Or (New Moon, 2007)
It’s a useful dream that makes
Quite an entertaining show and not much more
Up against and for, either/or.

I listen to the Ramones at a worryingly high frequency.
(Whether this is a negative thing is disputable).
@1 month ago with 1 noteThey declared the war on drugs like a war on terror
But it really did was let the police terrorize whoever
But mostly black boys, but they would call us “niggers”
And lay us on our belly, while they fingers on they triggers
They boots was on our head, they dogs was on our crotches
And they would beat us up if we had diamonds on our watches
And they would take our drugs and money, as they pick our pockets
I guess that that’s the privilege of policing for some profit
But thanks to Reaganomics, prisons turned to profits
Cause free labor is the cornerstone of US economics
Cause slavery was abolished, unless you are in prison
You think I am bullshitting, then read the 13th Amendment
Involuntary servitude and slavery it prohibits
That’s why they giving drug offenders time in double digitsKiller Mike, “Reagan”

The criminalization of file sharing must be profitable to someone. Is it the internet service providers, for whom torrenting is, itself, a huge drain on the availability of their networks? I once received a warning for “illegal downloading”. Want to know what I was downloading? Copylefted material. Zines in PDF format. No intellectual property stolen whatsoever. But, because I was using the service, I got flagged.
The record labels and networks aren’t upset about the loss of songs for individual sales. They’re upset at no longer being the media through which people discover music. They’re upset at the democratization of socially-networked file sharing. They want you to like what they tell you to like and nothing else.
When they talk about loss of intellectual property, they mean you.
